Liberty Bridge

Name: Liberty Bridge
Category: Architecture, castles and historic districts
Location: 1056 Budapest, Szabadság híd

Description

Along with the Chain Bridge, this is one of the most original in the city. This structure, with its 331m span, is a fine example of metal architecture. Christened Franz-Josef Bridge, it was opened in 1896 by the Emperor himself. It took on its current symbolic name in 1946, the year it was reconstructed. The mythical turul bird adorns the four turrets which crown the supports of the bridge. The arches at each end bear the Hungarian coats of arms topped by a holy crown.
