Vértanúk tere

Name: Vértanúk tere
Category: Architecture, castles and historic districts
Location: 1054 Budapest, Vértanúk tere

Description

In this small square you will see the statue of Imre Nagy standing on a bridge, his look turned towards the Parliament. Called to lead the government after the events of October 1956, Imre Nagy pushed through some radical reforms to liberalise the regime and escape from the Soviet yoke. The intervention of the Russian troops did not take long. He launched a pathetic appeal on the radio, even asking for protection from the Western powers. He was executed in 1958 and rehabilitated in 1989.
